What Causes Nosebleeds?
high blood pressure
blood thinning medications
How Do You Prevent (or decrease) Nosebleeds?
moisture, humidifier, saline sprays
ointment – neosporin, bacitracin, vaseline, aquaphor, Ayr gel, saline gel
avoid trauma – nose picking, hard nose blowing
keep blood pressure controlled
avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting
avoid blood thinning medications (talk to your doctor before stopping a prescribed medication like aspirin, coumadin/warfarin, plavix, etc)
avoid advil, motrin, ibuprofen, aleve, and other over the counter pain medications (tylenol is ok)
How Do You Control Or Stop A Nosebleed?
pinch the nose in the front (not up at the bridge)
try not to shove tissues in and out of the nose
keep head elevated/above level of the heart
doesn’t make a difference if you tilt your head forward or backward
apply something cold to face, nose
ice chips, ice cubes, popsicles in mouth can also help
afrin (oxymetazoline) nasal spray can make a big difference
If the bleeding keeps happening or is severe or lasts a long time, seek medical care
