Healthy Living Parenting Tips: Physical Activity in the cooler weather.
Hi, I’m Sandi, a public health nurse from the Durham Region Health Department. Have you noticed the air getting crisp and the mornings cooler? Looks like Autumn is starting to make its appearance. When the weather cools down, there are lots of fun indoor and outdoor activities you can do as a family to keep your kids away from the TV and screen time. We have invited some of our community members to help with our tips to keep your family moving, whatever the season!

School aged kids need at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity, including some muscle and bone strengthening activities at least 3 days per week. This can be done through a variety of ways! Physical activity in childhood has so many great benefits and is essential for a healthy brain development. Physical activity helps children and youth learn better, solve problems more creatively, and promotes positive mental health. It’s also important for stress management, emotional regulation and self-control, and greater self-esteem! So, to help you keep them active throughout the season, here are some tips:

Set Family goals! Fall can be a better time than ever to rediscover, recharge your activity levels, set new goals to decrease screen time and get moving! As a family decide on the amount of time that you’re going to be up and moving! And while you’re creating goals, it’s a great time to also think about how much screen time you’ll replace with family time.

Make Family Time Active! Exploring a new trail in Durham is a great way to be active as a family. There are many trails to walk, bike, hike, or jog all throughout the Region. To learn about all the great trails in your community, check out the Durham Region Trails Guide. Check out the link below for the guide. You can also bundle up and take a bike ride together! Choose a scenic trail to bike and appreciate the colourful leaves while getting some exercise.

Encourage kids to play outside! Active outdoor play has many benefits for children on their mental, emotional, and social health. Fall is a great time for making piles of leaves, playing hide and seek, or passing a ball around at the park. You can also encourage your kids to walk or wheel to school, which is a great way to ensure they are getting enough physical activity each day. It can help them stay focussed in the classroom too.! You can even do a family scavenger hunt with something as simple as a challenge to find an orange leaf or a stone/pebble that isn’t round!

There are also lots of opportunities to be active indoors! How about playing an indoor group game with a group of friends like Duck Duck Goose or Freeze Dance. Other ideas could include building a blanket fort, playing hide and seek, doing some living room yoga, having a family dance party or a game of charades. All these activities will be sure to keep the family moving.
